How to Organize Your Closet like a Pro

Three expert tips from a professional organizer to keep your closet organized.

At Sort & Style, my main focus is on the contents of your closet versus the organization of it, but the two really go hand-in-hand. Even if you’ve already purged your closet and feel great about what you’ve kept, it’s possible your closet still feels cluttered and overwhelming. Today I invited professional organizer Di Ter Avest, founder of Di is Organized and creator of the online program Organize Yourself Healthy, to help share some tips on how to keep your closet organized.

How Often Should You Organize?
“A change in the season is the best time to edit and organize the closet,” said Di. She suggests you should do it once or twice a year, during Spring and Fall. “This system will help you see what you haven’t used in the past six months, and the ones you don’t love anymore, so you can let go of those items without guilt.”

What if You’re Short on Space?

If you are short in space in your closets, Di Ter Avest recommends you rotate your clothes. “Find a nearby closet, under the bed storage, or weatherproof boxes in the basement or attic, to store out-of-season clothes. That will help you to see and use all the items you love and are in the current season”.

Di’s Top 3 Organization Tips:

  1. Hang Strategically

Start by donating or recycling your mix-matched hangers. It sounds silly to some people, but matching hangers help you see your clothes better and reduces the visual clutter. Hanging your clothes in order from sleeveless, short-sleeve, long-sleeve tops, pants, skirts, dresses, etc. If you feel inspired, color-code your clothes by white, tan, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, brown, grey, and black.

2. Make the Most of Drawer Space

Don’t pile your clothes in the drawers; file them instead. Use drawer dividers to keep everything in place. We like to organize drawers by long sleeves and pants in the bottom drawers and short sleeves and shorts/skirts in the top drawers.

3. Make Use of the Vertical Space

There is always a waste of vertical areas in closets. Make the most of it by adding baskets or boxes to the top shelves. Labels should be your best friend when organizing; label everything!
